Intellectual disability and major psychiatric disorders: a continuum of neurodevelopmental causality.

There is accumulating evidence for shared genetic as well as environmental risk between intellectual disability and other conditions with a neurodevelopmental basis such as autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, epilepsy and schizophrenia. These can be conceived as lying along a continuum of genetically and environmentally induced neurodevelopmental causality.

Role of nucleosome remodeling in neurodevelopmental and intellectual disability disorders

It is becoming increasingly important to understand how epigenetic mechanisms control gene expression during neurodevelopment. Two epigenetic mechanisms that have received considerable attention are DNA methylation and histone acetylation. Human exome sequencing and genome-wide association studies have linked several neurobiological disorders to genes whose products actively regulate DNA methyl...

Cellular reprogramming to study intellectual disability and neurodevelopmental disorders

Introduction Many neurodevelopmental disorders with intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder syndromes have overlapping genetic and molecular connections. Effective treatments for such genetic neurodevelopmental disorders have not been established yet. Possible reasons include the lack of suitable disease models of human neurons and a limited understanding of the etiological and neu...

Psychiatric disorders and behavior problems in people with intellectual disability.

The relationship between behavior problems and psychiatric disorders in individuals with intellectual disability is still unresolved. The present study compares the prevalence and pattern of psychiatric disorders in individuals with intellectual disability who were assessed on the ABC to have moderate and severe behavior problems and a matched group of individuals without such problems. Both gr...

Investigating mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental phenotypes of autistic and intellectual disability disorders: a perspective

Brain function and behavior undergo significant plasticity and refinement, particularly during specific critical and sensitive periods. In autistic and intellectual disability (ID) neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and their corresponding genetic mouse models, impairments in many neuronal and behavioral phenotypes are temporally regulated and in some cases, transient. However, the links betwe...
